My Experience as a wood carpenter
After completing my architecture studies, I had the opportunity to work for 10 months in timber construction, an experience that truly immersed me in the techniques of this material. I was involved in the entire construction process, from the building structure to the finishing touches. Whether it was timber framing, laying floors and parquet, or working on the roof up to the waterproofing stage, this experience allowed me to leverage my architectural skills to create detailed construction drawings and handle permit applications. It gave me a deep understanding of the possibilities offered by timber construction, combining technical expertise with precision in the details.
Ground floor extension and roofing
Our task was to complete the extension from the cladding to the interior vapor barrier, achieve waterproofing with an EPDM membrane, and reconstruct a staircase connecting the garden to the living room located on the first floor.
"Belle-voisine", roof renovation, an extension, and floor reinforcement
We worked on a 1930s-style house, well-known in the north for their narrow and tall typology. The house was in poor condition, and we had to reinforce the two floors. We completely redid the roof and took the opportunity to raise the side facing the garden to transform the attic into a master bedroom. Additionally, on the ground floor, we extended the living space and added a skylight to bring beautiful natural light to the dining area.
Building permit for a garage and living room extension
The client wanted to expand their garage to create a flexible space that could serve as a workspace, a small studio, or a storage area. Additionally, on the first floor, it was an opportunity to extend the living room and add a beautiful terrace to enjoy the summer days.
Wooden frame
Unfortunately, the house was partially destroyed by fire, and the roof was heavily damaged and needed to be completely rebuilt. We had to replicate it exactly, with a main truss and supporting wall plates on either side to hold the laminated beams to which the rafters are attached.
Traditional truss, constructed under the existing roof
We had to construct a truss with traditional mortise and tenon joints. The challenge was significant because we had to do this under an existing roof. The truss had to be built with substantial sections, as it would support not only the roof but also a new floor.
Bamboo terrace
There was a wooden terrace connecting the kitchen to the garden, but it was small, old, and not very practical. Therefore, it needed an upgrade. The clients wanted a large terrace to fully enjoy the garden and host various outdoor events. However, it needed to be made from a material that required minimal maintenance while still being aesthetically pleasing. Therefore, bamboo was an excellent choice.
high and comfortable terrace
We had to build a terrace for a belle-étage house (a type of home where the main living area is located on the first floor), with a staircase connecting the living room to the garden. The challenge was to ensure that the floor of the living room and the terrace were at the same level to create a seamless spatial continuity between the interior and exterior. Additionally, the size of the terrace provides a comfortable space, making it a true outdoor room where one can set up a table to dine, enjoy the garden, and bask in the sunlight.
Complete Extension of a House: From Roof to Ground Floor
The extension we completed doubled the volume of the original house, significantly enhancing the available space. Not only did this extension increase the living area, but it also improved the functionality of the home by adding extra spaces tailored to modern needs.
Floor renovation of a bar
The floor of this bar was in poor condition, with inadequate waterproofing causing the structural wood to start degrading and sagging. Therefore, we reinforced the floor by pouring new foundations, reconstructing the floor structure, and installing a floating floor for the finishing. Special attention was given to waterproofing to ensure the floor’s durability.
